Break beats. Most things you hear in breakcore/hardcore/jungle. A friend of mine pointed out that it’s not necessarily this sample but rather the idea of break beats being sped up and glued together that gave rise to jungle, but the Amen Break certainly holds its own in the land of Most Frequently Used Samples. The video is an good history lesson and raises interesting questions about copyright when it comes to music. Are drum beats really copyrightable, and if they’re not, what sets them apart from a guitar riff in a song? Range of options? That hardly seems fair (if you toss aside the whole ‘actually copyright is pretty bogus anyway’ argument).
